July 1998 Rides
|
July 31: First day in Montana for a 10-day stay to include Bike Montana organized by Adventure Cycling (Bikecentennial). After unpacking my bike and
examining the various problems - I cut my computer cable and stripped a crank arm - I headed over to Bangtail Bikes in Bozema. They fixed me up and pointed me
towards a good ride up to Bridger Bowl. I rode up a small mountain and noted my 6500ft elevation. Bozeman is around 4400ft. I heard some kind of wild beast (moose?)
making a ruckus off in the woods. In between its yelps, however, it was very quiet. Rode back to Bozeman with a nice long downhill and tailwind and
got stuck briefly in a sunstorm. July 26: Up into New York via Rt. 123. Nice ride down 102, over to Rts. 57/53. Very pleasant out, humidity is nice and low. July 19: Rode up into New York and wandered around a bit. Rode through Pound Ridge and Bedford and along some very bad roads. Back over to the Saugatuck Resevoir and through the backroads of Westport back to Norwalk. Saw some geese in Westport. Lunch in Weston. July 18: Rode up to Ridgefield and down Rt.33. Nice evening ride. Feeling pretty good from the brevet; energy level is really high. July 11-12: 600K Boston Brevet Ride. See how I did. This was a very pleasant ride into the Massachusetts Berkshires and back. The weather could not have been any better. Route 57 is a road I will be avoiding at all costs in the future. Very very nasty hills. Finished the 387.2 miles with a little over an hour and a half to spare. I also got a good six or so hours of solid sleep in as well. And I felt better after this ride than any of the other rides. BMB here I come! July 5: This was a ride over to the "Muur" of Grammon. The Dutch name is something like Gergisbergen(?). Rode up this infamous hill, where Tour de France riders fall over after 300K of riding. It was quite a hill and the cobblestones did not make any easier, but my triple crank certainly did. No walking was necessary. In the rain, however, I imagine it would be a disaster. Cobbles are not very friendly wet on flat sections and going up a steep grade would be a losing battle. At the top, I noticed a slowly shrinking front tire and a nice fat thorn sticking in my tire, so I sat down at the tourist stop up top and had a Leffe beer and some Dutch pancakes. Pretty tasty. I had a broken conversation with an older fellow who wanted to know how many kilometres I had done that day. After the stop, I rode over to Ninove and straight back to Waterloo. The beginning of the ride took me south of Waterloo. I saw some pretty neat model airplane flyers in the fields.
Total mileage for month - 637.3 miles
