Sarah's Recording Gear

The heart of your studio is the mixer. You need a quiet, clean mixer. I cannot overstate how important it is to have a quiet, low distortion mixer. I use a very clean Mackie CR1604, sixteen track. It works great. Nice and quiet. I expect my mixer to last me for many years to come. The one thing I have become familiar with is that the faders have to be kept very, very clean, as well as routinely exercised.

Any dirt results in scratchy movements. I've already replaced two faders with new ones. Something to keep in mind, is to keep a couple spare faders on hand just in case you need them. The nice thing about the CR1604 is that all of the faders are identicle. Even the master, and headphone faders. The replacement job takes a few hours, as you have to pull the front panel. That in itself is the majority of the project. There's quite a few knobs to remove to get that panel off. Somehow, it just doesn't seem to be that many knobs; that is until you start removing them. Plan on having an excellent solder sucker to remove the solder from the fader leads. Tricky, but quite do-able.
