My name is Debbie Moncrieff, Ph.D., CCC-A and my area of expertise is
children with CAPD. My research has focused on CAPD in dyslexic children,
but we also perform evaluations here at the clinic on all children and
will soon be adding children with hearing impairment. In addition to
behavioral measures (standard assessments of children with CAPD), I will
also be performing electrophysiology measures (where we record the brain's
electrical activity while the child is performing auditory tasks) and
functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) which will scan the child's
brain and record activation regions during the performance of auditory
tasks.
While much of what we do is still experimental, it is providing us with
very important information about how the brains of children with CAPD
differ from those of age-related peers who do not have auditory processing
problems. Ultimately, we hope to better diagnose the disorder and provide
remediation techniques that will help children overcome the problems that
CAPD causes in educational and social settings.
Our clinic will also begin joint appointments this summer with the
Dyslexia clinic here at UF so that children who have both CAPD and a
reading disorder will be referred for remediation techniques. By testing
the children before and after the remediation therapies, we hope to gain a
better understanding of which remedial techniques best address the
auditory processing component of a reading disability.
