UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544) Sunday 22 October, 1944
0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Unit 30.3.1 consisting of the following ships: BOSTON (OTC), HOUSTON, CANBERRA, BOYD, COWELL, CHARRETTE, BURNS, BELL, TREVOR. CURRENT and ZUNI towing HOUSTON, WATCH HILL and AT150 towing CANBERRA. TRAVOR out on picket station bearing 135' T., distance 5 miles from formation center. Base course 100' T. and PGC, 102' PSC, formation speed 5 knots. Patolling station #3 of a 5 ship screen, speed 10 knots. Screen is an equally spaced circle 5, 45' spacing between stations. CURRENT is formation guide. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness II, Material Condition Baker. Maintaining a sound and radar search. BOYD had radar guard "Dog". Boilers #1 and 3 are in use.

0400 - 0800. Steaming as before. 0524 - Went to General Quarters. 0542 - Changed course to 110'T. and TGC, 102' PSC. 0545 - TREVOR rejoined screen; formed six ship screen, took station #1, 5020. 0604 - Secured from General Quarters. 0720 - BURNS left screen to fuel from BOSTON; formed five ship screen, took station #1, 5020.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 0800 - Mustered crew on station, no absentees. 0825 - BURNS relieved CHARRETTE in screen. CHARRETTE proceeding to BOSTON to fuel. 0938 - CHARRETTE relieved BELL in screen. BELL proceeding to BOSTON to fuel. 1130 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal. 1200 - BELL rejoined screen. BOYD proceeding to station #1, 5020.

1600 - 2000. Steaming as before. 1805 - TREVOR left screen, took picket station 140' T., 5 miles from formation center; formed 5 ship screen, 45' spacing on circle 5; took station #3, 5045. 1831 - CANBERRA tow slowed; changed speed to 4 knots; WATCH HILL assumed guide.
