UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544) Saturday 21 October, 1944
0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Unit 30.3.1 consisting of the following ships: BOSTON (OTC), CANBERRA, HOUSTON, BOYD, COWELL, BURNS, BELL, CHARETTE, TREVOR, AT107, AT74, ARS22, ATH150, AT95, and WATCH HILL, on course 135' T. and PGC, 136' PSC, speed 5.6 knots. Cruising disposition 1R. Screen is 5 ship partial on circle 5. BOYD(Screen Guide) in station #3, 5045. Screen is patrolling station at 10 knots. TREVOR is picket on bearing 135' T., distant 5 miles. CANBERRA is being towed by AT107 and WATCH HILL. HOUSTON is being towed by AT74(Formation Guide). Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness II, Material Condition Baker. Boilers #1 and 3 are in use.

0400 - 0800. Steaming as before. 0525 - Went to General Quarters. 0615 - Changed base course to 115' T. and PGC, 121' PSC. Reoriented screen for course change. 0616 - Secured from General Quarters, set Condition II. 0623 - TREVOR rejoined screen taking station #5 in a 6 ship screen. BOYD adjusting to station #1, 5020 from Task Unit center, 40' spacing between screening stations. 0630 - On station #1.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 0800 - Mustered crew on stations; no absentees. 0930 - Changed base course to 110' T. and PGC, 117' PSC. 0945 - Half-masted colors. 1015 - Colors two-blocked. 1105 - HOUSTON'S tow line parted. HOUSTON and CANBERRA stopped. 1115 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples; conditions normal.

1200 - 1600. Steaming as before. 1310 - Screen commenced circling on circle 5. 1320 - Changed speed of screen to 15 knots. 1450 - HOUSTON underway with CURRENT and ZUNI towing. CANBERRA underway with WATCH HILL and AT50 towing. CURRENT formation guide. Base course 110' T. and PGC, 112' PSC. Speed approximately 3 knots. 1510 - BOYD resumed station #1, 5020. 1515 - Resumed patrolling at 10 knots.

1600 - 1800. Steaming as before. 1704 - Changed base course to 100' T. and PGC, 102' PSC.

1800 - 2000. Steaming as before. 1824 - TREVOR took picket station 135' T., 5 miles from formation center; formed 5 ship screen, 45' spacing, circle 5; took station #3, 5045.
