UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544) Friday 20 October, 1944
0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Unit 30.3.1 consisting of the following ships: BOSTON (OTC), CANBERRA, HOUSTON, BOYD, COWELL, GRAYSON, STEPHEN POTTER, THE SULLIVANS, AT74(Guide), AT107, ARS 22, on course 115' T. and PGC, 120' PSC, speed 5.5 knots. Cruising disposition 1R. HOUSTON is being towed by AT74, CANBERRA is being towed by AT107. Screen is 5 ship partial circle 4. Screen is patrolling station at 10 knots. BOYD(Screen Guide) in station #1, 4000. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness II, Material Condition Baker. Boilers #1 and 3 are in use.

Steaming as before. 0520 - Went to General Quarters. 0535 - Left station in screen and proceeding to go alongside STEPHEN POTTER to transfer personnel. 0545 - Alongside port quarter of STEPHEN POTTER. 0603 - Completed transfer of personnel. Received aboard the following members of the ship's company: HOFFMEYER; KING; MILLER; GIBSON. 0604 - Proceeding to station #1 of screen #53. 0612 - STEPHEN POTTER and THE SULLIVANS detached from Task Unit 30.3.1. Proceeding to station #1, 4000, of a three ship screen. 0628 - On station #1. 0700 - TREVOR and WATCH HILL joined Task Unit 30.3.1. 0710 - Proceeding to staion #1, 4020 of four ship screen. 0725 - On station #1, 4020.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 0800 - Mustered crew on stations, no absentees. 1110 - ZUNI (ATF95), joined the formation. WATCH HILL joined AT107 in towing CANBERRA, ZUNI joined AT74 in towing HOUSTON. 1130 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal.

1200 - 1600. Steaming as before.
J.R. WILSON
1600 - 2000. Steaming as before. 1630 - Changed base course to 135' T. and PGC, 142' PSC. 1737 - GRAYSON detached from TG 30.3.1 to join TG 30.3.2. BELL joined TG 30.3.1 taking station #2 of a four ship screen. 1817 - BURNS and CHARRETTE reported for duty in TG 30.3.1 and took station #4 and #6 of a six ship screen, 45' spacing between stations. BOYD in station #1.

2000 - 2400. Steaming as before. 2045 - TREVOR left screen, took picket station on course axis, distant 5 miles. BOYD took station #3, 5045 of a five ship screen.
