UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544)                 Thursday 19 October, 1944


0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Unit 30.3.1 consisting of the following ships: BOSTON (OTC), CANBERRA, HOUSTON, BOYD, COWELL, GRAYSON, STEPHEN POTTER, THE SULLIVANS, CHARRETTE, AT74 (Guide), and AT107, on base course 170' T. and PGC, 173' PSC, speed 5 knots. Cruising disposition 1R. HOUSTON is being towed by AT74, CANBERRA is being towed by AT107. Screen is 6 ship partial, on circle 4, screen is patrolling station at 11 knots. BOYD (Screen Guide), in station #2, 4340. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness II, Material Condition Baker. Boilers #1 and 3 are in use.

0400 - 0800. Steaming as before. 0535 - Went to General Quarters. 0635 - Secured from General Quarters, set Condition II. 0700 - CHARRETTE left screen to commence mail delivery to BOSTON. BOYD took station #1, 4000, of a 5 ship screen.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 0800 - Mustered crew on station, no absentees. 0835 - CURRENT, ARS22, joined the formation. 0903 - Changed patrol speed to 10 knots. 0916 - CHARRETTE came alongside, delivered mail. 0923 - Delivery completed, CHARRETTE cleared side. 1130 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal. 1135 - THE SULLIVANS left formation, proceeded to Task Unit 30.3.2; CHARRETTE rejoined screen.

1200 - 1600. Steaming as before. 1329 - Changed base course to 175' T. and PGC, 178 PSC.
