UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544)                 Wednesday 18 October, 1944


0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Unit 30.3.1 consisting of CANBERRA, towed by AT 107 (Guide), HOUSTON, towed by AT 74, BOYD(OTC), COWELL, GRAYSON, STEPHAN POTTER, THE SULLIVANS, on course 120' T. and PGC, 124' PSC, speed 5 knots. BOYD in position #2, station 3.5335 of screen #54, patrolling on station at 10 knots. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness II, Material Condition Baker. Boilers #2 and 4 are in use. Task Unit 30.3.2 cruising independently ten miles north of this group.

Steaming as before. 0510 - Identified group of ships bearing 090' T., distant 9 miles as oiler group. 0530 - Exercised crew at General Quarters. 0624 - Secured from General Quarters, set Condition of Readiness II. 0630 - Cut #3 boiler in on main steam line. 0635 - Secured #4 boiler. 0652 - #1 boiler cut in on main steam line. 0655 - Secured #2 boiler. 0728 - COWELL left screen to join fueling group, formed screen #53. BOYD in station #2.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 0800 - Mustered crew on stations, no absentees. 0854 - Proceeding to station #1, 3000. 0900 - Proceeding to station #1, 3.5025 of screen #54. 0911 - Unidentified aircraft reported bearing 090' T., 27 miles; went to General Quarters. 0918 - Unidentified aircraft reported to be friendly; secured from General Quarters. 0930 - Left station in screen and proceeded to fueling group. 0935 - Returned to station #4, 4295 of screen #54. 1000 - Took station #2, 3.5325. 1130 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal. Left screen and proceeded to fueling group, Task Unit 30.8.8. 1155 - Set the special sea details.

1200 - 1600. Steaming as before. 1208 - BOYD went alongside KENNEBAGO to fuel. 1222 - Commenced fueling. 1310 - Completed fueling having received 1975 barrels of fuel oil at 60' F. 1317 - BOYD away from alongside KENNEBAGO, on various courses at various speeds proceeding to CANBERRA in Task Unit 30.3.1. ComCruDiv 10 in BOSTON designated OTC of 30.3.1. 1402 - Stood off starboard quarter CANBERRA. Course 120' T. and PGC, 128' PSC. Made all preparations for pumping feed water. 1430 - Went alongside starboard quarter of CANBERRA. 1450 - Commenced pumping boiler feed water to CANBERRA.

1600 - 2000. Steaming as before. 1621 - Completed pumping water to CANBERRA. 1629 - Cast off all lines, commenced using various courses and speeds to take position #1, station 4000 in screen #55. 1659 - On station, commenced patrolling at 10 knots. 1731 - Changed course to 180' T. and PGC. formed cruising disposition 1R, BOYD in position #1, station 4000. AT 74 assumed guide. 1804 - Darkened ship.
