UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544) Tuesday 17 October, 1944
0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Unit 30.3.1 consisting of the following ships: SANTA FE (OTC), BIRMINGHAM, MOBILE, HOUSTON, CANBERRA, GRAYSON, THE SULLIVANS, COGSWELL, INGERSOLL, STEPHAN POTTER, COWELL, CAPERTON, AT107(Guide), and AT74. HOUSTON is being towed by AT74 and the CANBERRA is being towed by the AT107. Base course is 130' T. and PGC, 138' PSC, speed 5 knots. Cruising disposition is 3V, with screen circling towed and towing ships at various courses, base speed 15 knots on the 5000 yard circle. The screen guide is SANTA FE. The CAPERTON and COWELL are pickets. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness II, Material Condition Baker. Boilers #1, 2, 3 and 4 are in use.

0400 - 0800. Steaming as before. 0530 - Went to General Quarters. 0611 - Formed cruising disposition 3R. 0630 - BOYD on station #2 of screen #57, 4330 from formation center. Commenced patrolling station at 11 knots. Secured from General Quarter.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 1045 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal. 1055 - Commenced using various courses and various speeds proceeding to the BIRMINGHAM to fuel. 1100 - Half masted colors following instructions of OTC. 1105 - Stationed special sea detail. 1115 - Alongside BIRMINGHAM portside to. 1128 - Commenced fueling. 1130 - Two blocked colors.

1200 - 1600. Steaming as before. 1204 - Completed fueling having received 599 barrels at 60' F. 1210 - Cast off all lines, commenced using various courses and speeds to go alongside MOBILE to transfer remainder of survivors from HOUSTON. 1225 - Along starboard side of MOBILE. Received tow line. 1230 - Commenced transferring personnel, on course 150' T. and PGC, 153' PSC, speed 7 knots. 1300 - Changed course to 085' T. and PGC, 089' PSC. 1328 - Completed transfer of personnel, cast off all lines; commenced using various courses and speeds to take position #2 in screen. (The complete list of HOUSTON survivors transferred to the MOBILE is appended to this watch). 1351 - Commenced patrolling on station at 11 knots.
