UNITED STATES SHIP BOYD (DD 544) Monday 16 October, 1944
0000 - 0400. Steaming in company with Task Group 30.3 consisting of the following ships: BOSTON, SANTA FE(OTC), BIRMINGHAM, CANBERRA in tow by AT102, HOUSTON in tow by BOSTON, BOYD, COWELL, GRAYSON, COGSWELL, INGERSOLL, CAPERTON, STEPHEN POTTER, THE SULLIVANS, and AT102(Guide), on course 130' T. and PGC, cruising disposition 3V, speed 4 knots. Screen is circling on a circle of 4000 yards at 15 knots, rotating clockwise. Formation axis is 130' T., BOYD in position #2 of screen. Screen guide is SANTA FE. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Rediness II, Material Condition Baker. Boilers #1 and 3 are in use.

0400 - 0800. Steaming as before. 0425 - COGSWELL left formation. 0520 - COGSWELL rejoined. 0535 - Went to General Quarter. 0636 - Secured from General Quarters. Set Condition II. 0720 - Proceeding on various courses at various speeds taking station in disposition 3R. PAWNEE joined formation. 0740 - BOYD took station #2, screen 57, patrolling station at 10 knots.

0800 - 1200. Steaming as before. 0800 - Mustered crew on station, no absentees. 0903 - Left screen, proceeded to BIRMINGHAM to transfer one half HOUSTON survivor personnel, using various courses and speeds. 0938 - Alongside BIRMINGHAM'S starboard side on course 080' T. and PGC, 085o PSC, speed 6 knots; towline secured. 1055 - Completed transfer of half of HOUSTON personnel (as appended to this watch); all lines clear, left from alongside, proceeded to screen BIRMINGHAM back to formation. 1130 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal. 1139 - Formed screen #52 on BOSTON with GRAYSON, took station #1, 3045, escorting BOSTON to task unit 30.3.2. 1157 - Joined Task Unit 30.3.2 on course 050' T. and PGC, speed 15 knots. Proceeded to MOBILE, using various courses and speeds to transfer remainder of HOUSTON survivor personnel. Steaming as before. 1207 Ships turned left to 080' T. and PGC. 1220 - WITCHITA designated guide. 1232 - Set special sea detail. 1233 - Ships turned left to 070' T. and PGC, 075' PSC. 1235 - BOYD proceeding to go alongside MOBILE starboard side to for the transfer of HOUSTON survivors. 1247 - Alongside MOBILE, received tow line. 1310 - Large groups of unidentified aircraft reported bearing 270' T., 79 miles. 1331 - Ceased transferring personnel, cast off all lines having transferred one third of remaining survivors. (Complete list of survivors transferred to MOILE appended to log of 1200 - 1600 of 17 October, 1944). 1344 - Secured special sea detail. 1338 - Proceeding on various courses at various speeds to station 3180 from Task Unit center in formation 2V. Forming in screen with Task Group 30.3.2 on axis 060'T., speed 20 knots. 1346 - Unidentified aircraft sighted low on water bearing 290o T. 1407 - Ships turned right to 260' T. and PGC, 256' PSC. 1405 - Cut #4 boiler in on main steam line. 1413 - HOUSTON, in Task Group 30.3.1, reported under air attack. 1417 - Ships turn left to 240' T. and PGC, 236' PSC. 1422 - Ships turn left to 240' T. and PGC, 236' PSC. 1443 - Secured from General Quarters, all unidentified

aircraft opening in range. 1444 - Changed course left to 140' T., proceeding to van of MOBILE in company with GRAYSON, escorting MOBILE to Task Group 30.3.1. MOBILE on course 195' T., speed 25 knots. 1450 - Three destroyers ordered to close HOUSTON in turn, to take off survivors. 1510 - Joined Task Group 30.3.1, taking station astern of MOBILE in formation 3V. Task Group 30.3.1 on base course 130' T., speed of advance, 4 knots. 1521 - Circling HOUSTON while abandoning operation underway.

1600 - 2000. Steaming as before. 1620 - Commenced forming cruising disposition 3R. 1636 - On station, position #2, 4330 from formation center, in screen #55. Commenced patrolling station at 11 knots. 1652 - Formed screen #57, BOYD in station #2, 4320 from formation center. Screen commenced rotating ground formation at 15 knots. 1903 - Changed screening radius to 5000 yards, BOYD station now 5320 from guide.
