0000 - 0400. Searching area around HOUSTON picking up HOUSTON personnel in water using various courses and speeds. BOSTON taking HOUSTON in tow. Ship is darkened and in Condition of Readiness 1E, Material Condition Baker. Task Group 38.1 patrolling around area at various courses and speeds. 0007 - BOYD and COWELL discontinued search. (List of survivors recovered is appended to this watch). Formed screen #52 on HOUSTON, in tow by BOSTON. BOYD taking station #1, 3045, from HOUSTON. Course is 150' T. and PGC, 162' PSC. Speed approximately 2 knots. Screen is patrolling station at 15 knots. 0025 - On station #1. 0030 - Secured from Condition 1E, set Condition II. Radar Condition V in effect. personnel for taking muster. 0953 - GRAYSON joined the formation; formed screen #53, took station #1, 3000; GRAYSON took station #3, COWELL took #2. 1025 - Sighted Task Group 30.1 on the horizon bearing 330' T., and PGC. 1046 - Went to General Quarters; enemy aircraft contact bearing 195' T., 25 miles. 1104 - Enemy air raid opened, secured from General Quarters, set Condition II. 1120 - Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples, conditions normal. 1153 - Changed base course to 130' T. and PGC, 125' PSC. 1155 - Commenced joining Task Group 30.3.

Steaming as before. 1200 - Formed cruising disposition 3R with Task Group 30.3, BOYD in position #2, station, 4330 of screen #57. 1225 - Let fires die out under boilers #2 and 4. 1330 - Changed to station 5345 in screen #56. 1400 - Set special sea detail. 1407 - Commenced using various courses and speeds to go alongside BIRMINGHAM for fueling. Draft before fueling: Forward, 13'; after, 14'. 1440 - Along port side of BIRMINGHAM, on fueling course of 040' T. and PGC, 037' PSC. 1445 - Received tow line forward. 1452 - Commenced fueling. 1516 - Transferred injured HOUSTON survivor, FREEHOUSE, C. to BIRMINGHAM. Diagnosis: Crushed Chest. 1530 - Completed fueling having received 649 barrels of fuel oil at 60' F. Draft after fueling: Forward, 13'3"; aft, 14'2". 1538 - Cast off all lines, commenced using various courses and speeds to take position #2, station 4330 of screen #57.

1600 - 2000. Steaming as before. 1616 - Took station #2, 4330 from formation center. Commenced patrolling station at 11 knots. Guide's speed is 4.3 knots. 1810 - Formed disposition 3V; took station #2, 6278. Commenced circling formation clockwise. Screen guide SANTA FE. Base screen speed 15 knots. 1827 - Screen closed formation to 4,000 yard circle.
