Battle 5: Crab
vs. Crane, 1000 Koku
A follow-up to Battle 4, in this battle the
Crane forces made a small incursion into Crab Territory, and a battle was
fought on a boulder-strewn beach between the cliffs and the sea.
Visually, this was an interesting battle, especially given that the terrain
was completely improvised and at the last minute: Beige tablecloth
for the beach, blue towel for the sea, and foam rubber scraps for the cliffs,
rocks, and dunes.
This battle was also an intitial experiment with mounted troops.

It was interesting to watch the Iron Warriors try not to get outflanked
by the Cavalry and the Medium Elite. The Elite Archers butchered
the Crab Heavy, who made a straightfoward assault on them. (What
worked against the Doji House Guard in the last battle did not work against
the more accurate Elite Archers.) It was at this point that my opponent
jokingly suggested that he finish his figures with lots of little arrows
sticking out of them. The Iron Warriors were engaged by the Cavalry,
and managed to inflict significant losses on them, but a botched duel and
a Bad Kharma (after an attempt to heal a wound) disabled Kuwanen,
and the unit was unable to maneuver to avoid a flank attack by the Medim
Elite.
Lessons Learned:
-
Improvised terrain can be a lot of fun
-
Two small units can defeat one large one
-
Duelling is not Kuwanen's strong point...
-
Strength of Purity doesn't do a whole lot of good if your personality
is in a duel (duh)
-
Bad Kharma seems like a pretty unbalanced card
