| Encriology: |
The science or the study of the vessels used for the storage and dispensing of ink to writing instruments. These vessels are usually denoted as inkstands or inkwells. It is only by convention that fountain pens are not considered encriological objects. The term encriology is derived from the French term "encrier" for inkstand (not encre, or ink), and "-ology" for "the science or study of", also used in French and traceable to the Greek. Clearly, one who pursues such knowledge concerning inkstands, etc. is an encriologist. |

Inkpot:
|
An archaic term for Inkstand. One may argue that an inkpot is just an inkstand without additional apparatus or receptical for storage of additional items, but it is not clear the historical use of the term made that distinction. |
| Inkstand: |
A free standing vessel for dispensing ink to writing instruments. |
| Inkwell: |
A vessel, contained or retained in a recess of a writing surface such as a desk, for the storage and dispensing of ink to writing instruments. |
