Inkstand Basics

Double Judd Snail

To arrive at a common terminology, and as an aid in the discourse concerning inkstands and inkwells, the following topics are provided with the hope of converging to a common "language" within the community of Inkstand aficionados.

Inkstand Anatomy

By virtue of their functions, Inkstands and inkwells have many structural parts in common, dictated by the requirements of writers, the "laws of gravity", and the circadian changes in the environment around them. These "anatomical features" are presented in Inkstand Anatomy.

Inkstand Terminology

The very terms "inkwell" and "inkstand" are subject to abuse in common usage. Although "inkwell" seems to be the generic term in common use nowadays, "inkstand" is the generic or class term used on these pages (though most interested individuals probably have formed their own opinions). To join the fray, take a look at Inkstand Terminology to see if the definitions match your opinion. If not, let our resident Encriologist know.

Inkstand Taxonomy

Like any other taxonomy, the objective of establishing an inkstand taxonomy is to find a coherent view of the common features of inkstands and inkwells, such that the intrinsic, observable aspects of a specimen would allow useful classification or categorization. This classification should be sufficiently descriptive that one's listener or reader could grasp the salient features with sufficient clarity and detail to recognize the description as being the same as one known to them, or sufficient to enable the decision, perhaps, to acquire. A preliminary attempt at such may be found at Inkstand Taxonomy.
