A Conversation with Karen & Bill
Karen: Our goal has been to establish a healthy and stable family life in order to create a good environment for children.  Leaving the military, with its long separations and frequent moves was a step towards achieving our goal; another step was to get re-educated in careers that would support a greater sense of family.  A couple years before we came home, I went back to graduate school full-time to become a teacher.  I earned my Master's degree in Business Education at the University of Hawaii and taught business / computer classes at a local high school.  I found working with students to be so gratifying, fun and challenging.  The best part of teaching for me is getting to know each of the students.  I aspire to make a difference in each student's life.  This career change is exactly what I was searching for and will be perfect when we have children in school.  After being a stay-at-home mom for the first 6+ years, I hope to return to teaching part-time when our children are in elementary school.  A teaching career will accommodate our children’s school schedules and provide us with the extra money for their college education.

“I loved student teaching.  The students and I built great relationships and really enjoyed our semester together.  I will always remember each of my 71 students.  Here I am with my Office Procedure students and my Coordinating Teacher, Joan.”
“Maybel, my star pupil, and I stay in touch.  Here we are together with her son, James.
Karen’s Graduation from the University of Hawaii with a Master’s degree in Business Education.
Here Bill, my Mom and I are with my professor, mentor and friend, Frank and his lovely wife Ann.  We have stayed close friends ever since and have visited each other despite the distance from CT to Hawaii.
Bill: Karen loved her students and they loved her.  Karen has a special gift that allows her to quickly develop close relationships with others, especially children and teenagers.  She is caring, empathetic and an excellent listener.  I love to see Karen light up when she talks about her students.  She plans to continue teaching one evening per week to stay active, but the majority of her time and energy will be dedicated to being the best mom she can possibly be.  We have never considered daycare an option for us.  It has always been Karen's dream to be a stay at home mom and provide our children the same type of upbringing that our parents provided for us.
Karen: After getting my new teaching career established I encouraged Bill to pursue his interests in business so we could leave the demanding military life knowing we would have long term financial security.
Bill: After the Navy, Karen supported us financially (Thanks Karen!), and I went back to graduate school full-time to earn an MBA - Master's degree in Business Administration.  Upon graduating, I was hired as an Investment Officer for a large stable company.  I now work a 'regular' workday, have a short commute to work and rarely travel.  I thoroughly enjoy my work, work environment and co-workers.
Finally I have a “regular” job - normal hours and I come home every night.
“We will provide a child with unconditional love for a lifetime.”
