3 Rockdale County Students Take First Place in GA 4-H Cotton Boll & Consumer Judging Competition

By eMetro Times | on November 11, 2015 | 0 Comment
Education Rockdale

CBCJ TeamThree Rockdale County students took first place in the Georgia 4-H Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging competition, which was held on Nov. 5.

Christina Brown of General Ray Davis Middle School, Layla Dent of Memorial Middle School, and Sarah White a homeschool student competed as a team and placed first out of 11 junior teams in the North Georgia contest.  In addition, Christina Brown took second place for Junior Student Overall out of 32 participating juniors.

Teams are scored in two categories: Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging.  Cotton Boll is a cotton related commercial or public service announcement created by the students and then presented to a panel of judges.  The Consumer Judging portion of the competition requires the students to judge four classes of items based around scenarios that are provided.  This year, the students judged headphones, hoodies, family cruises and trail mix.  After judging is complete, the students must give verbal reasons as to why they placed the items in the order they chose.

Rockdale County’s Senior team consisting of Amanda Pye, Amanda Cathcart, Justin Spencer, and Niya Hadley placed sixth out of 12 senior teams that competed in the contest.

These students spend weeks preparing for this competition by attending weekly practices held at the Rockdale County UGA Extension office.  They learn about the items they will be judging and practice their cotton presentation in front of their peers and staff members.

If your child is interested in joining 4-H please contact the Rockdale County UGA Extension office at 770-278-7373 or by email [email protected]
