Lightning Spark Radio Simulator
Materials: Portable radio, 9V battery, alligator clip wires, file, plywood.
Building Instructions: Hook the negative end of the battery to the file using clip wires. Hook up the positive end to a clip. Rub the other end of the clip on the file with the radio on to hear lightning static.
Function and Use: Lightning produces electromagnetic radiation (e/m) across a wide band of frequencies. Have you ever heard your radio crackle during a storm - this is the e/m due to lightning. This demonstration allows you to simulate this effect. By carefully holding the alligator clip and gently rubbing it against the file you will hear the crackle on the radio. Don't hold the file while rubbing the clip against it and don't keep the clip in contact for very long - just rub it quickly and put the clip down and let someone else try it!
